Since the Kyoto Protocol is a legally binding international instrument, implementation of its provisions needs considerable scientific and technical knowledge. CDM & Sri Lanka

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a mechanism defined under Article 12 of the Kyoto Protocol. It is expected that CDM will assist Parties not included in Annex 1 in achieving sustainable development. CDM will assist Annex 1 Parties in achieving compliance with their quantified emission limitations and reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.

CDM potential in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka acceded the Kyoto Protocol on 3^rd September, 2002 and hence is eligible for CDM. In line with the Kyoto Protocol, the National Framework Policy for CDM has been developed. According to a recent estimate, Sri Lanka has the potential to claim about 6.2 million CERs.
